Single-use Plastic in Canada

An environment consists of all the elements of the atmosphere and the pollution of these elements by any activity is called environmental pollution that is a burning topic of the modern world. One of the most hazardous objects that pollute the environment seriously is plastics especially single-use plastics. Plastic forks, knives, shopping bags, plates, coffee cups, water bottles, straws, Styrofoam, and any other containers are the major examples of single-use plastics. The use of these items is very high in Canada still now especially in the Toronto. Poor recycling is causing the harm for environment regularly here. That is why a campaign named “Toronto Recycled Art (TRA)” will be helpful in reducing the use of single-use plastics and increase public awareness about it. These plastic items can be recycled and converted into another usable product that will decrease the pollution as well as costs of the people.  That’s why the government is taking sensible steps that will make people avoid using plastic products. In Canada, single-use plastics are the major obstacle for the environment. In the freshwater environment, single-use plastics make up most of the plastic litters in Canada. It is estimated that Canadians will throw out almost $11b worth of plastic items each year after 2030. This is huge and without proper recycling, this huge amount of money of Canadians will go in vain negatively as it will do immense harm to the environment (Gao, 2020). Among these widely used plastic materials, only 9% get recycled. And the remaining 91% get mixed with the water and soil. Every year, up to 15b plastic bags are used in Canada. Plastics in the water create a hazardous environment in water that pollutes the water as well as hampers fish production. The demand for freshwater is getting high as the population is also reaching its peak. But because of the pollution, the sources of fresh water is getting reduced day by day (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, 2019).In the meantime, the city of Toronto is facing a huge problem in tackling this situation. That is why they are now proposing some bold actions that will help reduce single-use and takeaway plastic items. This city has to spend approximately $25m every year to deal with the litter in the parks and streets. Now the municipality is taking the issue seriously and making sustainable decisions to prevent the use of single-use plastics (Buonsante, 2019). Ultimately the use of single-use plastics is becoming a huge threat for the entire universe and it is high time to prevent the high usage of single-use plastics.
